Hello 135th St. Elementary School Community,

The Flu Season is in full swing. At school, we are responding to the increase in flu cases by having classrooms and the Nurse's Office disinfected nightly by our custodial staff, reminding students to sneeze or cough into their arm and to wash their hands frequently.

When students are sent to the Nurse's Office with signs of the Flu,we place a face mask on them control the spread of the flu virus and contact their family.

I have attached  a flyer with information on the Flu from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Let's all work together to stay healthy this Flu Season :)

Dear Families,

We are very excited to have our school participate this year in the Million Word Challenge, a reading campaign that promotes a culture of literacy at home.  The campaign encourages students to read millions of words, outside of school time for 12 weeks February 23 through May 16, 2017.  We will also reward students for their efforts in reading outside of school.

Here is how you can help you child during the reading campaign:

  • Register for free literacy tips to become eligible to win weekly prizes by calling (888)766-2242 or register on-line at www.familiesinschools.org/million-word-challenge.
  •  Visit the local library or school library to check out books to read at home.
  • Set up a family reading time at home when everyone reads at the same time every day.
  • Have daily conversations with your children and ask them questions about the books they are reading.
  • Help your children track the books they are reading on the Million Word Challenge Reading Log.  When they fill it up, make sure they turn it in to their teacher and ask for a new one to keep reading.

I hope you will encourage your child to continue reading beyond the bell and promote the Million Word Challenge in your home.  We will ask each child to turn in his/her Reading Log to their teacher as soon as they fill it up and ask for blank logs to continue reading.

For more information on how to support your child's reading, visit www.familiesinschools.org/million-word-challenge. Thank you for supporting the Million Word Challenge and helping your child read and succeed.

Best Wishes,

Dr. Pablo E. Osorio

Principal
