Principal's Message

Making a Difference Everyday

Welcome Back to School 2018-2019 !!! :)

August 15, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to personally welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year! I hope your summer vacation has been a relaxing, rejuvenating, and a fun-filled time of special memories to last a lifetime.  As I start my 5th year as principal of 135th Street Elementary School, I am full of excitement and hope for what we can collectively accomplish for your children.

We did amazing work the last three year and this year will be even better yet!  My number one priority continues to be ensuring the safety and security of your children and of our staff.  Last year, we established the Safety Valet Parking on 135th Street and we expanded that program to address the traffic safety concerns on 134th Street.  In addition, we will continue with our safe school morning and dismissal procedures.  Please remember that we have a closed campus for the safety of all students and adults.  Students will be dismissed after school through designated gates by grade level.

Academically, our teachers teach the Common Core Standards and now have a cohesive Writing approach called Writers Workshop.

Attendance is Very Important

Please make sure that your child attends school every day, on-time, and ready to learn.  The goal is for students to miss less than 7 days during the whole school year.  It is also very important that students come to school on-time.  Students should be on campus before 7:50 a.m. that is when the tardy bell rings.  We want every student to “be great not late.”  Please note that 3 tardies = 1 truancy.  Also, note that in order for a student to receive a Perfect Attendance Award Trophy he/she must maintain 0 Absences + 0 Tardies + 0 Early Pick ups.  With your help, your child can receive an attendance award for coming to school every day, on-time, and ready to learn!

Dress for Success

All students at 135th Street Elementary School are expected to dress in a school uniform daily.  Wearing a school uniform helps ensure that students are neatly and appropriately dressed for learning.  The uniform consists of a navy blue polo shirt (collared only) and navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts. Regular close-toed tennis shoes or sneakers are appropriate.  If you would like to purchase school uniforms with our mascot, please come to the main office for more information. Please note no backpacks allowed in school.  Each student will receive a folder to keep their homework and important papers organized.  If you would like, you may also purchase a 3 ring binder with a zipper.

Parents as Partners

We welcome and encourage parent engagement in our school.  Parents are their child’s first teacher and we want to help you help your child at home. We have great things planned for this school year in the Parent Center. We will have the following activities:

•   Decision Making Councils like the School Site Council (SSC), Local School Leadership Committee (LSLC)

•   Advisory Committees like the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) and Local Initiative School (LIS)

•   Workshops on various topics related to how you can help your child succeed in school and in life.

•   Volunteering Programs such as Gardening, School Beautification, Cafeteria, Safety Valet Club, and many more.

I look forward to your participation in our advisory and decision making committees.  Please refer to the school wide events calendar to see exact dates and times of meetings.  In addition, we have many more activities to promote parent engagement in our school.

Last Thoughts

The number one reason why we are all here is to serve your children and you.  As the principal, I am personally committed to set the tone and direction for our school.  I know that when you send your children to school, you entrust us to care for and teach them.  I take your trust in us as a tremendous responsibility.  Please rest assured that I am here to ensure that your children are in a safe, caring, and nurturing learning environment.  I am also here to address any concern you might have.  Please join me for Coffee with the Principal the 1st Friday of each month at 8:15 a.m. in the parent center.
